We toured the two schools today for Maxwell. One is the regular public school with a special ed program the other is a special school for the disabled. In NV there would have been none of this going on. We would have sent Maxwell into the school and he would have had very little help. Here there is lots of options and lots of help. In fact, the school for the deaf will or may become an option when Maxwell turns 5, it would be now but they don't take kids until kindergarten although they will come to our house.
Anyhow, it was a very strange experience. Maxwell is so little still and I wish he could stay at home. He's leaving me too early :( He will be in the preschool system for 3 years before he starts kindergarten.
I had Sam with me and Maxwell for the tours. We brought Max so he could see what is in his near future. He seemed to enjoy the school for the disabled very well, as it should be, it is also the school we prefer at this point. I was very impressed with the facility and amount of attention each student gets along with the schedule for the day. They even have a therapy pool, offer gym, music time, story time, and many other things.
Anyhow, if he goes to this school which is the likely choice, we will find out at the IEP, then he will even get his own little cubby for his backpack. The school has about 30 students. Maxwell would be in a class of 5, he would make the second boy. From the looks of it there was only one kid in the class who could walk. By far Max exceeds in areas beyond some of these kids but he will get the much needed therapy that would be harder to get elsewhere. As I told Sam, it seems Maxwell kind of belongs in between the kids who attend the schools (as in, in between the kids at the disabled school and the kids at the public school program).
So, we were impressed, Maxwell will like it, and he is familiar with his teacher already. In fact, as we were walking through the school a lady came up behind me. She is one of Maxwell's nursery teachers. I had no idea she substituted at the school there, so he may also see her from time to time.
My baby is going to school soon and so I guess I ought to go school shopping and get some things for him, like containers for his snacks and lunch.

kylie will be in the same situation in a year and a half and i can't imagine just sending her off--even though it will be good for her. Good luck! At least it sounds like you have a terrific support there.
