It rained last week. I didn't think much of it. It was nice to see the rain. It rained all day. It was nice...until I saw the the water dripping from the ceiling. Not too bad, so I put a bowl underneath to catch the water. Not too long later I saw the water leaking from the window and noticed the floors were getting wet. By this point I had called the landlord and he was on his way. Before he showed up there was water leaking from the ceiling in the kitchen and I noticed the water leaking at the window above the sink.
The landlord came. He did what he could (it was still raining) for the roof leaks but since this is such an old trailer there was absolutely nothing he could do about the windows leaking. So, I put towels there to help. Because of the way the windows are the water would leak in at the top, the middle and whatnot, and as a result the water would slide down and into the walls and then down to the carpet.
It wasn't until later that night that I realized the other windows I had checked (they weren't leaking from the top) would be leaking somewhere else. Not one window was spared in our "house". Some faired better then others. Some walls were soaked so completely through and some floors were so wet that you could touch it and see the water splash up. So began the fight with towels and water and the fight to make sure nothing else got damaged or ruined from the water. Sam's favorite piece of furniture faired ok but was still damaged a little bit and we were able to save everything else from the damage of water. I ran out of towels and put soaking wet ones in the dryer for another round of work at a window sill. By midnight all the towels, but one, were in windows. However, just before bed the ceiling began to leak again, much less than before but by the looks of it I knew it wasn't going to look good in the morning. There was nothing I could do but put the bowl back in place to catch the drips and head off to bed.
Throughout the night I could smell the water in the house. The damp, rainy smell, not yet rotting....The rain must have stopped early in the morning, I'm not sure when, but the house didn't look too much different then when I had gone to bed. The towels were all soaked, there was a little bit more water on the floors (the towels didn't help much at all) and there was a huge section of the kitchen ceiling hanging down toward the floor. Miraculously there was not water on floor under that section of ceiling. I don't think it fell until all the water had gone nicely into the bowl.
Since the rain had stopped, and our house was a wreck we decided to leave the house and let the landlord do his thing. So, I picked up the phone to call....no answer....lots of heavy static....there was no way a call could come in or out. So, we headed to the library and used the phone there, letting our landlord know just what was in store for him at our house. We then decided to head off for a drive.
We drove West, toward California. We went a few miles into California and saw the signs that said flooded. No biggie, there was some large "flooded" areas to the side of the roads but nothing else...Until we saw the water on the road. We stopped. Although it only rained for one day it provided quite a nice flash flood. We sat there watching as the water rushed over the road and as Sam put it, "there are waves," we decided to just watch. We turned around just as someone was approaching. They were in a much worse car their ours. They asked us if it was too deep to cross. They noticed our vehicle was low, but somehow it didn't click with them that theirs was much lower than ours. We drove a little ways and stopped to watch them in our rear view mirror. We waited to see their stupidity in crossing. Instead they stopped where we had been previously and we all watched as a pickup coming from the other side approached the water. They stopped. The small car people waved at the truck to tell them they wanted them to cross. The pickup crossed, gently, and cautiously. The small car people stopped them as they came out of the water. Obviously they still were not convinced yet and needed confirmation not to cross from the pickup people. We drove off as we watched the small car people turn around, grateful that someone was able to convince them it would be stupid to cross.
So, we headed to Vegas. Had a great day watching a car show and checking out Lake Mead.
